Meet Alex Curfman

Alex Curfman is a 35 year old artist, born and raised in Richmond, VA. From painting and shaping bonsai trees, to routesetting and yoyoing, the process of creating is a driving force behind all he does. Working mainly in acrylics, Alex likes to utilize a wide variety of surfaces to work on. Along with some traditional canvas and wood panel pieces, he also explores clear surfaces and more sculptural pieces.

Picking up art at an early age, Alex studied it through high school. In the following years art took a back seat to life, but in 2019 the spark was rekindled. Diving back into creating on a larger scale, Alex slowly found his footing. Developing a unique style of artistic brush strokes and heavy line work. He would continue to explore new painting surfaces, from clear surfaces like mylar and polycarbonate, to custom cut wood panel pieces and now sculptures.

Alex is well known for his work in bonsai. After practicing bonsai for nearly a decade, he wanted a way to bring these tiny trees to a wider audience. Recreating his own bonsai trees in an acrylic form in 2023 opened the door for the following years of work. Now pulling whimsical and futuristic trees from his mind and recreating some of the most iconic trees to scale, Alex has created a unique way for anyone to enjoy these little trees.

This would culminate in his debut solo exhibition “Acrylic Art Of Bonsai” in spring of 2026. Hosted in downtown Richmond by Big Deal Projects, this is a unique show that blended the living art of bonsai to the acrylic art of bonsai. By displaying a mix of clear, wood panel, and sculptural paintings alongside a number of his own bonsai trees. he provided a way to educate and immerse to viewers in the world of bonsai.
